An Organisations Guide To Saving Your Organisation Electricity

Filed under: The Technology Way at 11:01 am Comments Off

A lot of businesses these days rarely spend much time looking at their utility expenses. Rather, companies continue to pay whatever the energy provider charges them each month, without knowing it they could very easily reduce their organisation’s energy payments significantly by lowering their power usage.

It’s exceedingly important to understand that changes to your heating and ventilation systems can have a somewhat huge effect on the total amount of energy consumed every week. Furthermore, small adjustments in your employees’ daily habits can also help you to save a lot more business energy than you would think.

To save business energy the two most essential things to keep in mind are as follows; replace the electricity appliances that consume a significant amount of power with more power efficient equipment, and secondly, smart usage of electrical appliances at the office can also help you save on your business’s payments.

Always ensure that you switch off your electricity machines when they are not being used. You will definitely be stunned to know that televisions, personal computers and microwaves use as much as ninety percent of the energy when in standby. Another really important thing to keep in mind is to switch off the lighting each and every time you leave the office, mainly because it is one of the most straightforward and effective techniques for you to lower energy consumption. Not on this, but energy saving light bulbs uses a lot less power than existing tungsten filament light bulbs. Therefore, by swapping your current set of light bulbs will help to lower your business’s electricity usage a great deal.

Radiators should also be either switched off or at least be turned down low when not in use as you can save electricity by just turning the heating on at a lower temperature. The same rule of reducing the temperature also is valid while heating water.

For efficient electricity management, the maintenance of your organisation’s properties is incredibly important. The property ought to be suitably insulated and the machinery ought to be clean and well maintained in order that day to day costs can be kept as low as possible. For natural lighting, windows should not be blocked by office furniture. Angled blinds should be used so that sunlight can bright up the office on sunny days. Find superb energy deals from various commercial electricity suppliers online today.

Moreover, the government is increasingly encouraging organisations to invest cash in greener electricity. Because of this, you can claim tax incentives by investing money in electricity saving services.

UK’s 4D Data Centres Introduces New Dedicated Server Line

Filed under: Hardware Parlor and Software Programs and The Technology Way at 5:51 am Comments Off

It was a swift entry into the dedicated server market with ServerSwift.
This is the new dedicated server business launched by UK-based 4D Data Centres. The independent neutral data centre space provider recently introduced its own brand of dedicated server solutions with headquarters set up within its own data centre in Surrey. The new brand features a wide range of server products for email, web and application hosting utilizing either Ubuntu or Windows 2008 platforms. ServerSwift expects to compete with current dedicated server leaders in terms of service quality and pricing.

The market for dedicated servers is constantly growing mainly due to the need for SME’s to cut back on their capital expenditure as well as on their operating costs.
ServerSwift servers will offer branded machines that are pre-installed with the client’s choice of applications and operating systems. It will also offer an automated setup process to ensreu that the server is online and updated with custom configurations set by the client a few minutes after the order is submitted. Clients will be provided with direct access to servers as well as to a web based administrator.

ServerSwift will offer a flexible platform for both application and website hosting, explains David Barker, Technical Sales Director for ServerSwift and 4D Data Centres. It will provide users with the ability to leverage the power of both Linux and Windows 2008 without the need for specialist knowledge so they can configure and set the server up. He further adds that the new brand strives to provide the best value for their client’s money, catering to businesses looking to expand their operations to the internet.

Vodafone Hosts Unified Communications for SMEs

Filed under: Hardware Parlor and Software Programs and The Technology Way at 7:25 am Comments Off

Vodafone announced Wednesday that it has launched a hosted unified communications platform that will allow small and medium-scale businesses to provide their employees with one phone number for both mobile and landline telephones as well as a single voicemail box for incoming calls to either. Dubbed the Vodafone One Net, the platform will be an offshoot from Vodafone One, a non-hosted unified communications solution that is designed for corporate customers.

The major challenge now is how the mobile carrier will be able to sell this service, says Ovum analyst Richard Mahoney. Vodafone has been known for selling minutes and bytes and the new platform is going to be a big change as far as service offerings and applications are concerned. How the company’s sales force will cope with this change is going to be worth watching out for considering that UK is a very complex market to tap into.
Under the new offering, businesses will be charged a flat rate for every user. The prices are going to be based on one of five tariffs according to the hosting services required.

The service will provide a unified communication service to small businesses. This can potentially cut overhead communication costs by as much as 20 percent while at the same time providing predictability, explains Vodafone UK enterprise director. According to the company’s market research, communication accounts for one of the biggest expenditures for SMEs mainly due to overlap in fixed and mobile lines as well as the complexity of service plans.

One Net appears like it will benefit companies that are heavily reliant on mobile communications as well as those that do not really gain a lot from their internal communications infrastructure, says Gartner Group research director Katja Ruud.
Vodafone also announced that it has inked a five-year deal with BT wholesale so the mobile operator can offer fixed-line services for the new package.

Consumers to Finance Country’s Broadband Infrastructure

Filed under: Buyers Guides and Telecommunication Management and The Technology Way at 6:36 am Comments Off

The broadband infrastructure development project in Britain requires £200 million to enable it to reach fast connection speeds of 2Mb. This price will have to be borne by the consumers, as they will have to pay 50 pence per month or £6 per year to contribute for this initiative, if a proposal set out in the Digital Britain report is implemented.

The Digital Britain report is endorsed by Lord Carter who has justified the extra burden on the users by saying that the levy will be later compensated by the decrease in the cost of broadband service. This will be due to increased competition among the players in the market.

The EC authorities are however verifying the necessity of charging the broadband levy on the fixed line subscribers for the development of the new network. There might be a setback in the plan as imposition of this broadband levy might not be in accordance with the competition rules of the EU. The EC authorities are not certain yet if the proposed plan will comply with or breach the rules.

According to the European Union competition laws, the broadband levy plan must be within the limits of the allowed government aid for an industry. However, the compliance depends largely on the exact implementation of the suggestions in the report. Until the government releases the implementation plan, the EC cannot give an opinion regarding its compliance with state aid rules. The competition spokesperson for the EC said that clarity on the issue could be achieved only once the details of the plan are revealed. Britain Shows Shift in Consumer Behaviour Patterns

Filed under: Buyers Guides and Telecommunication Management and The Technology Way at 6:59 am Comments Off

Consumers in Britain are no longer in a buying mode, at least not in the communication and media market. Booz & Company, which is a well-known research company, recently carried out an analysis of consumer behaviour patterns in Britain and came up with some surprising results.

The survey revealed that providers, leaving the likes of BT, which offer bundled plans, could well be in for a shocking turn of events. This is because almost 25 per cent of those surveyed said that they had cut their communications and media expenses, while another 26 per cent are expected to do so in the coming six months.

If this is not disturbing enough, 23 per cent revealed that they might go as far as terminating their broadband or TV subscriptions, while another quarter said that they might halt their mobile usage or switch to a connection that is less expensive, such as pay as you go mobile broadband.

However, 45 percent did show an interest in the bundled deals being offered by companies like BT to continue fulfilling their entertainment needs and at the same time saving some money.

Providers should now reconsider their short term as well as long term plans to tackle this decline in subscriber base since consumers today are making more informed choices, warns the head of the UK division of Booz & Company, Michael Peterson.

Data storage virtualization is the latest technology buzzword :Research Shows Data Storage Companies

Filed under: The Technology Way at 5:22 pm Comments Off

Every 3 years, technology vendors cook up a new marketing hype to sell their products to gullible clients. In this context, server virtualization is the latest buzzword to hit the data storage industry.

Today, every data storage product in the market, such as network routers, storage area networks and network attached storage are sold by IT vendors under the guise of ’server virtualization’. Indeed, server virtualization seems to be the cure all to all data storage problems, global war, terrorism and probably even AIDS.

In a recent interview, Gary, editor of the data storage portal,data-recovery-reviews .com rubbished the whole concept of data storage server virtualization

To the layman, server virtualization is simply a set of tools to serve as layer between logical and physical storage. Server virtualization promises a great deal – data storage vendor neutral products in data centers and easy server consolidation. This means that CIOs no longer need to worry about buying all their data storage products from a single vendor.

Gary mentioned that server virtualization in the form of vendor neutral data storage is definitely what every IT data center needs, but no data storage company is bound to offer server virtualization since it would mean that their proprietory products could then be replaced at any time with a competitor’s data storage product.

The CIO of a mid size pharmaceutical company, Mike Fisher, recently remarked that it is amazing how each and every data storage product claims to support server virtualization but does not offer product compatibility with products from other vendors.

Gary’s survey of data storage products suggests that data storage vendors are least interested in saving client costs by providing server virtualization data storage products in data centers.

Gary accepts that Vm ware’s server virtualization products come closest to the real promise of server virtualization in terms of data center data storage technology, but there is still a long way to go to achieve true server consolidation and server virtualization.

In conclusion, server virtualization is just another marketing hype that is being touted by technology vendors. Haven’t corporate clients heard of vaporware before?

8 Ways to get Free Targeted Traffic

Filed under: The Technology Way at 5:22 pm Comments Off

8 Ways to get Free Targeted Traffic
By The HitsBam Team
http://www.hitsbam.com

What good is your website if no one knows about it? The reason most webmasters fail within their first year is because they overlook advertising and promotion. Just because you have a perfectly designed website does not mean that people will find it. It is not hard to produce a steady stream of targeted traffic, and it can be absolutely free if you do it right. Below are eight free ways to produce quality targeted traffic for your website.

1. Search Engines
Search Engines are one of the best sources for targeted traffic and potential customers, so search engines should be one of the biggest factors for advertising and promotion. Did you know that most people never click past the first page of search engines? You need to be on the first page of search engines for your targeted keywords to generate targeted traffic. Getting your website to the top of search engines such as Google and Yahoo for free takes special methods called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Search Engines Optimization envolves many factors, such as Meta Tags, Inbound Links, <title> tags, keywords, content, and PageRank. Since SEO is such an advanced field, HitsBam has written a completely seperate article entitled A Complete Guide to Search Engine Optimization to get you to the top of search engines for free.

2. Message Boards
Message Boards, or commonly known as forums, are great places to make partnerships with other webmasters and gain targeted traffic. First, create a signature post file with your name and URL so everytime you post a message, people will be interested in your website. Then introduce yourself slowly by posting useful information and answering questions. The more active you become in the forum, the better, because you will be known as an “expert”, which gives you and your website a good reputation. Always remember to obide by the forum’s rules and NEVER spam them with your website. A good signature for a forum would look something like this:

———————————————
Your Name
http://www.yourwebsite.com
“A funny or catchy quote”
———————————————

3. Email Signatures
Imagine that every email you send out is advertising for your website. This can be a reality if you utilize email signatures. Almost every email program or website has this feature. You can use it when sending personal emails, business emails, when you email your clients, in your autoresponder, or any other email that is sent. Email Signatures are perfect to keep people coming back to your website because the signature reminds them that your website exists. Remember to never spam, it just is not worth it. A good email signature would look something like this:

———————————————
Your Name
Your Website Title
http://www.yourwebsite.com
“Your Slogan” or a Short Description
———————————————

4. Content
Content, Content, Content! Search engines are so sophisticated these days that the only real way to get on the top of search engines is to have good keyword-rich content. Not only will you recieve top rankings on search engines, people will actually want to visit your site, especially if the content is for free. You could also post your articles at ezines and websites and leave your link at the bottom. This lets people know that you are knowledgable and that they should visit your website, and it works suprisingly well to generate targeted traffic for free. You can make some real money selling links on your website if you have good content. Some websites with a PageRank of 7 or more sell links for $250+ a month! Don’t forget to place your keywords all over your website and in your articles. The more keywords you incorporate into your content, the better, just make sure it is still an understandable article and not just an article full of keywords.

5. Start A Newsletter
Newsletters can be a great way to keep visitors comming back to your website. It is suggested that you send out a unique issue every week to keep reminding the customers that you are still here, but make sure each issue is different and has something to offer the reader, usually free information. Once you reach about 100 subscribers, the newsletter can become an income generator, as you can sell ad space on it. You can find some great free scripts for your newsletter at www.ACJavascripts.com.

6. Awards
Submitting your site to be chosen for awards is a great way to get people to find your website. If you happen to win a big award that fits the color scheme of your website, you could display it proudly on your front page showing your visitors that the website is reliable and has won awards. You can find out more about how to apply for awards with free software from http://www.market-tek.com/awardsite.html.

7. Free Stuff
Free stuff to offer your visitors is a great way to keep them comming back or to persuade them to buy your products. There are many things you can offer, such as email addresses, games, information, tips and hints, software, ebooks, and the list goes on. You could give away something that would compliment a sale for your product. An example would be to give away free information on how dirty air can cause health problems if you are selling air purifiers.

8. Traffic Swarm
We usually do not support traffic exchange programs and click for traffic programs, but we have found an exception. A program called Traffic Swarm has been one of our biggest targeted traffic producers. It’s unique way of letting the surfer choose what site they want to visit has proven successful and has reflected it’s success to it’s members. They do offer a pro memebership that gives you bonus credits, 2000 credits per month, a featured site link, and much more. HitsBam highly suggests joining this free program.

Humans and Bees Go Back a Long Way

Filed under: The Technology Way at 12:04 am Comments Off

The ancient history of of man and bees has been writen about for thousands of years. Specifically the human history and the use of Bee’s Wax is truly fascinating. We have often been asked where wax comes from? Well there are many types of Waxes. Bees wax has been around for a while. There are many mentions of beeswax in historic writing such as the myth where Icarus son of Daedalus put on wings of wax and as he flew too close to the sun, it melted and Icarus fell to his death. The father with more experience flew closer to the ground and made it to Italy.

In Roman times Pliny, lived from 23 AD to 79 AD and described white bees wax which he got by boiling yellow bees wax in salt water. This was then used in broth and feed to those with dysentery, it was also used as a skin softener. Some beeswax to this day is used in cosmetics. Virgil the great Roman Poet (well I do not think the stuff is that good) wrote of an invention by Pan, who was the guardian of the bees (an ancient bee keeper man) made a flute of reeds held together by bees wax. During the Middle Ages wooden panels covered with beeswax was noted by Homer a Greek poet. Many Romans were honored by having statues made of them selves made in bees wax and thus today we have the Movie Land Wax Museum in LA. Romans also wore Death Masks as well occasionally. The Egyptians used wax figures of deities in funeral ceremonies and placed them in graves.

In 400 BC Greek Historians say that Persian coated bodies were a form of embalming. The Assyrians covered bodies with bees wax and then dipped the bodies in honey? Hey honey, who knows? In 181 BC when the Romans defeated the Corsicans and imposed a tax of 100,000 lbs of bees wax. The Romans demanded bees wax when they conquered the city of Trebizond in the first century AD. In Medieval European times wax was a a unit of trade for taxes or other. In 1330 farmers in one region of France paid 2 lbs of bees wax per year. On 1632 records show that the French Monastery called for rent of 600 lbs. of bees wax per year. Also in 1371 a petition was presented to the London Court of Alderman in behalf of the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, which established them as the world’s oldest English Guild. In 1483 the company received a Royal Charter with authority to oversee the craft of wax chandlery. And when faults were found to punish the offender, which included seizing the wax.

Candles of bees wax were at one time required by the Roman Catholic Church as the exclusive and only candles. The bees were brought to Puerto Rico by the church and the early priests and conquistadors.

Cisco CCNA Certification: The Hidden Details Of Telnet

Filed under: The Technology Way at 9:26 pm Comments Off

Telnet is a simple yet powerful program that allows you to connect to a remote Cisco router or switch, and then configure it as though you were right at the console. Telnet is also one of those features that seems so very simple, until you get asked a half dozen questions about it on your CCNA exams. As with all topics, it’s the details you know about Telnet that will help you pass the Intro and ICND exams.

Let’s take a look at a few of these details. We’ll begin by debunking one common belief about Telnet:

Telnet runs at layer 7 of the OSI model, not layer 3!

It’s easy to think that Telnet runs at Layer 3 of the OSI model, the Network layer. After all, you’re entering an IP address when you telnet in to a router or switch, and you may be on another router when you do it! None of that matters. Layer 3 is strictly the domain of routing. Like other features that require input from the end user, especially authentication, Telnet runs at the Application layer of the OSI model.

Speaking of authentication….

Cisco routers require a password to be set before anyone can telnet in.

Cisco routers can run quite a few passwords. We can set an enable password, an enable secret, an enable secret and enable password, a password for PPP connections, and even a console password.

All of those are optional, but the telnet password is not. Makes sense – you wouldn’t want just anyone telnetting into your router, would you?

If you have no password set on the VTY lines of your router, no one can telnet in. If they try, they’ll see this message:

R1#telnet 3.3.3.3

Trying 3.3.3.3 … Open

Password required, but none set

[Connection to 3.3.3.3 closed by foreign host]

To allow telnet access into a Cisco router, configure the VTY lines with a password and the login command:

R3#conf t

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

R3(config)#line vty 0 4

R3(config-line)#login

% Login disabled on line 2, until ‘password’ is set

% Login disabled on line 3, until ‘password’ is set

% Login disabled on line 4, until ‘password’ is set

% Login disabled on line 5, until ‘password’ is set

% Login disabled on line 6, until ‘password’ is set

R3(config-line)#password cisco

Note the messages you get after enabling login. These messages simply indicate that the login won’t work until a password is set. The order with which you use the login and password commands don’t matter just make sure you use them both.

We’re not quite done, though. The remote user can now telnet in, but by default, that user will be placed into user exec mode. If the user is to be allowed to enter privileged exec mode during a telnet session, an enable password or enable secret must be set.

R1#telnet 3.3.3.3

Trying 3.3.3.3 … Open

User Access Verification

Password:

R3>enable

% No password set

R3>

The user is stuck in user exec until you set a local enable password. Doing so will allow the user to use that password to enter privileged exec mode.

R3#conf t

R3(config)#enable password ccna

R3(config)#^Z

R1#telnet 3.3.3.3

Trying 3.3.3.3 … Open

User Access Verification

Password: < user entered cisco here>

R3>enable

Password: < user entered ccna here >

R3#

The user is now in privileged exec mode. There’s also another method to use so the user is placed directly into privileged exec mode when telnetting in, avoiding the enable password prompt. Use the command privilege level 15 on the VTY lines to do so.

R3#conf t

R3(config)#line vty 0 4

R3(config-line)#privilege level 15

R1#telnet 3.3.3.3

Trying 3.3.3.3 … Open

User Access Verification

Password: < user entered VTY line password here >

R3#

Note that the user went straight to privileged exec mode.

Managing Telnet Connections

We already know how to use Telnet (a layer 7 application) to access a remote device there are also commands that help us manage telnet connections.

“show sessions” is a common command to see what current telnet sessions are operating.

Telnet sessions do not have to be exited they can be suspended as well. The command to suspend the Telnet session is followed by striking the “X” key.

To resume this telnet session, enter the resume command followed by the session number (“resume 1″) and press .

To end a suspended telnet session, enter the disconnect command followed by the session number (“disconnect 1″) and press .

DNA Testing Breaks Down Barriers in the Court Room

Filed under: The Technology Way at 9:47 am Comments Off

DNA testing has three major applications for forensic studies: identification of missing persons; identification of victims of wars, accidents, and natural disasters; and crime investigation. Annually, more than 20,000 forensic DNA tests are performed in the UK. Two out of three of all criminal cases using DNA evidence involve sexual assault, the rest are cases dealing with burglary, murder, and other types of violent crime. During the last 15 years, DNA analysis became an indispensable police tool in fighting crime because it allows unambiguous identification of the criminal by traces of biological material left at the crime scene. It can also acquit innocent suspects based on DNA evidence.

Criminal justice system now relies heavily on DNA-based evidence. Since it was first used in the Enderby murder case (1986), thousands of perpetrators has been convicted of various crimes with the help of DNA evidence, and hundreds wrongfully convicted people have been exonerated.

The most common samples collected at the crime scene are blood, semen, and saliva; virtually any biological material or objects handled by a perpetrator can be now used for forensic DNA testing. Clothing, furniture, and other items which may have traces of DNA, are now routinely used for obtaining DNA evidence. The technology is so sensitive that it allows identification of a person by analysing DNA collected from a fingerprint left on the surface of an object or from a single hair left at a crime scene.

When a crime scene sample or a sample from a suspect is analysed, a DNA profile is produced. A DNA profile is a digitalised representation of an individual’s genotype with respect to the DNA markers tested. In the UK, all crime scene DNA profiles together with those of all suspects and arrestees for any recordable offence are deposited into a National DNA Database (NDNAD), which is the world’s first criminal DNA database. As of 2004, the UK national DNA database held over two and a half million DNA profiles collected from suspects and convicted criminals which is estimated to be about 40% of UK criminally active population as well as more than 200,000 crime scene samples. UK Police use the NDNAD as an investigative tool to help solving a wide range of crimes including murder, rape, sexual assault, robbery, terrorism, burglary and arson and have almost doubled their clearance rate for volume crimes such as house burglary, and motor vehicle offences. As each new subject sample profile is added to the database, it is checked against all contained crime scene sample. When a new crime scene sample profile is added, it is checked against DNA profiles of all suspected individuals as well as against other crime scene sample records. Since its inception in 1995, the NDNAD had matched more than 200,000 crime scene samples to suspects and more than 20,000 crime scene samples to other crime scenes. Every week more than 300 crime scene samples are matched to the suspect and convicted criminal’s database.

However, a DNA match between a suspect and a crime scene does not automatically guarantee a conviction. DNA evidence is just another piece of evidence, although very strong one, and on its own is often not enough to convict someone of a particular crime. DNA evidence must always be taken in conjunction with other pieces of evidence and the weight of DNA evidence is impossible to estimate without taking into account the circumstances of the case. Even when a strong match between a defendant and a crime scene sample is presented by the prosecution, non-DNA evidence may be pointed to someone else as the real perpetrator of the crime. This “other” evidence can decrease the weight of DNA evidence and increase the chances of successful defence.

The discovery of DNA fingerprinting 20 years ago had revolutionised the legal profession. Criminal and non-criminal justice systems were handed a very powerful tool to solve crime and resolve civil cases. Understanding how DNA testing can be applied in legal profession will bring benefits to both lawyers and their clients.
