It was midnight and Lance Winslow was watching the clock, perhaps a bad habit from his past. In High School and later in College Lance was a trackstar; he finally accomplished his goal, to run a 4-minute mile.

Since that day Lance has always lived by the second not the minute and sometimes a day seems like and eternity, as at those times in competitive track, you race against world-class athletes all of which are headed for the Olympics or at least that is their goal. It is all about precision, pace and beating your body in to submission.

To compete at that level you must live without limits and believe you will. He still remembers those days, the workouts, the food, the long runs, blisters, tight muscles, hours and hours a day beating himself up for the next race, but not peaking too soon in the year otherwise there would be no chance at winning the championship.

Tonight was another of those intense personal competitions, what drives this guy, many asked, even Lance couldn’t tell you anymore, that is all he knew, it had become a habit in everything he did. Running a business, running in an election, giving a speech or doing non-profit work. He competed, generally against himself, for there were no others willing to go the distance. Often criticized or called into question by seemingly impossible record setting accomplishments, somehow people just assumed he was cheating. Not so, never a steroid, skipped practice, missed class or forgoing a promise in a handshake.

When Lance retired at age 40 from a franchise business he created which set up businesses in 22 states, he decided to help fix some things he had observed in the world. He decided to write about his ideas, concepts, innovations, experiences, observations, but he could find no real good place to post these articles, where many people would see them and he would not be forced to write anything he was not passionate about.

Lance discovered a really cool Internet site called; EzineArticles.com, which worked out really nice and Lance set out to write the most articles. Within a month and a half he surpassed all the others, but he knew if this was going to be something he was going to do in his spare time, then he would just have to compete against himself and Lance’s most competitive adversary was; time. Lance knew a lot about time, in fact he had been competing against it his whole life.

But on this night he watched the clock; his goal was to reach 600,000 article views by midnight having only written 2525 articles many were quite new and although they were gaining views from Internet Surfers to read they were not going to get him to that kind of number right away. He tried every possible way to increase his article views, just like in business or running, trying new strategies, new food, different workouts, better shoes or more efficient machinery; he knew he had to continue to work harder; knowing the old statement; “it is surprising how lucky your are getting when you are working hard.” He had done all that and now he waited to see if he could make the grade of 600,000 hits by Midnight.

It was 11:59.59 and he hit the refresh button to see how he had done. It had taken hard work and it took him “time,” to come this far, but the time had come, the time of truth. He looked down at the number; 599,996; “oh,” he sighed, he had felt like this before but it was so many years ago, once in politics having run and lost in an election, that was so very close and then there were all those times in track, when he had worked and trained much harder than what he saw in the movie; “Rocky” only to come up short by a few seconds, although he rarely ever lost a race, Lance was always racing against time.

Now with 2525 articles and over 111,500 words in seven months and all that hard work, he once again missed by his goal; he was so very close. Almost tasting victory and only missing by a mere 4 clicks from web surfers looking to read his latest titles and articles. Some ask why he does it, but some also ask mountain climbers why they do. In the 20 days leading up to the midnight self-induced contest and somewhat unrealistic goal Lance received 100,000 hits minus the four article views he needed to beat the clock, to defeat time.

He then thought of his next goal; Three Quarters of a million hits, could he make it by New Years? Hard to say that is 150,000 article views through the holidays, often sprinkled with less internet surfers especially around the bigger holidays. The goal has been set, he knows what he has to do, he has to write more articles, while allowing the ones in circulation to press on, it is a numbers game as he races against time and only time will tell. Whether he gets that lofty seemingly impossible goal or not, the next goal after that will most likely be 1-million article views.

Even if your best friend owns a top publishing company, giving you an immediate “in,” this does not guarantee publishing success.

First, you have to write a quality book that has a clear target audience. And your book must answer a common problem or need that audience shares. Then you have to develop a marketing plan, and stick to it for at least two years.

Let’s begin with the process that should commence before you write your first word. Begin by reading A LOT. Read both books you passionately love and books you can’t seem to make it past page five. Then figure out what the author did in the book you loved, and what was wrong with in the book you couldn’t finish. Write down these points so they are crystal clear to you. Read other people’s books for inspiration and to discover what you should avoid as a writer.

The next step is to plan out your book. Narrow down your subject, and then divide it into chapters. Each chapter should address a specific aspect of the problem your book is going to solve. In each chapter, break the specific aspect down into several parts. This will help your readers take in your information a bit at a time instead of overwhelming them with every bit of information clogging up the pages until they feel like they’re about to go blind. It’s not quite spoon-feeding the information to your readers, but it’s close.

The next two steps are obvious. Write your book and then revise it. And then revise it again. And perhaps again. Of course, writing is extremely hard, and writing a book can seem like an impossible task. There are many books out there that give you guidelines to help you become familiar – and even love – the process of writing and revision. Find a number of books about writing. Better yet, find a number of books about writing the specific type of book you aspire to write. These can serve as roadmaps on your writing journey.

Once you’ve written your ebook and revised it at least twice, show it to someone else whose opinion you respect. If you’re lucky enough to know a good editor, see if you have something to barter for him or her to go through your manuscript. Or join a writing group and let the other members critique your work.

Then take all these ideas from other people, and revise your manuscript one last time. And then stop! Put down that pen! Get your hands off the keyboard!

One of the most important steps to actually producing a book is to know when to stop writing and tinkering with it.

You’ve finally written your ebook! Pop open the bubbly! Give yourself a night out on the town!

Okay, now that this necessary celebration is out of your system, what do you do next?

How to turn your ebook into Profits

Ebooks are a revolutionary way to publish your book without incurring the costs of print production. All you need is a relevant and targeted subject and some inexpensive software, and you can transform your manuscript into a book.

The problem, in terms of actually seeing any profits from your ebook, is that the market is overwhelmed with ebooks, and many of them are not worth the time it takes to download them. Just because the ability exists to easily produce an ebook, doesn’t make it good writing.

Make sure your book does not simply rehash old material. You will injure your credibility as an author by claiming to offer valuable new insights and disappointing your audience with material they’ve read a zillion times before. So spend enough time writing and revising your book to make sure it’s of the highest quality and presents the most current information. A good book will eventually sell itself; false claims about your book will make it extremely difficult to sell any future books you may write.

Assuming you have determined that you do indeed have a quality product that answers some question or need of your target audience with NEW information, how do you know how much to charge for it? Rule number 1: Set a price for your book equal to its value. An under-priced book will only give the impression that your book isn’t worth very much.

To figure out a fair price, estimate how much time you put into creating it and how difficult it was to transform the necessary information into understandable and engaging writing. Figure out how much your time and effort is worth, and then price it accordingly. The goal is for you to be adequately compensated for your talent, your time, and your effort.

Once you’ve figured out a price that is high enough to convey the value of the book, but not so high as to be out of the reach of your target audience’s mean budget, then it’s time to offer it for sale on your website. To attract sales, you will need to develop a promotional campaign, particularly if you are an unknown author.

There are multitudes of books about self-promotion that will guide you in your efforts. Choose a plan that is both creative and professional. Learn how to write a catchy yet informative press release, and send copies of your ebook to sites that specialize in ebook reviews.

Learn how to write powerful sales copy, or hire someone to write it for you. This is an essential. You absolutely need excellent sales copy to sell your book. Make sure the copy includes all the reasons your target audience needs your book, and the benefits they will derive from buying it.

Use graphics in your promotional materials. Beautiful graphics have the power to instantly convey the quality and value of your ebook. Graphics can also convey the amount of valuable information the book contains, and your careful attention to detail. Professional graphics sell professional books. They reassure the customer that the product is what it claims to be.

Consider excerpting chapters for articles. You can offer these tidbits for free on your website as a sort of demo of your book. Include an order form for your ebook at the end of the excerpted articles.

Finally, when you set-up your download link, make sure to simplify the process. It’s a good idea to offer a few bonuses that make your book even more enticing to purchase, but make sure the bonuses are valuable and high quality. Too many bonuses that are basically a load of useless stuff will compromise the impression your audience has of your ebook. The goal is to convey to your audience that they are getting a quality product for a good deal. That means applying restraint, especially when it comes to adding bonus items. Too much free stuff offered diminishes your credibility.

Make sure your book is a quality product. Make sure it is relevant and current. Develop an effective marketing plan that includes excellent sales copy and excerpted articles. Then offer your book for sale, and wait for your audience to discover you!

P.S.

If you’ve enjoyed this article, please be sure to forward it to a friend.

There are many articles out there that state that there is a feud between professional writers and article writers who take part in ezine article submission sites. I’m an author. I’m not famous by any means, but maybe one day I will be. I am somewhat known in the independent writing scene. The authors who have big contracts may not know who Jeffery S. Miller is, and that’s ok. There are a lot of writers who do.

I have taken heat for submitting articles on article submission sites. Some have even taken cheap shots, and it’s true some writers don’t like people doing this. On the same token, I don’t like a lot of things some writers do, but I’m not going to provoke a literary war over it. Some write online articles for fame, some do it for money, and some do it as a hobby. I enjoy writing articles. I haven’t been doing it lately, but I’m getting back on track. I actively promote my website at the bottom of the article, hoping the kind readers will check out my site. I do promote the books that I have written, but if they don’t feel like buying a book that will be ok. People are reading what I have to say and they are taken the time to visit my site. I am thankful for that.

Every online article writer is different. Just like each of us are different in our everyday lives. I am an opinionated person, so I write articles. It’s a way to release what’s on my mind and hopefully it will entertain a few folks. I don’t feel I’m taking away from the writers who want to be paid. I’m sorry if you feel that way, and I hope you find work. We’re not bad people. Many of us just enjoy doing this.

Writing online articles is an awesome way to promote yourself as a writer, business, or what have you. If you have been hesitant to try it out, I’d recommend you giving it a try. The ezine publishing industry is gaining ground. Sites like Alexa show that there is a demand for quality articles. Give it a try and gain credibility in your expertise.

I’ve heard a lot about what writers have to say about the publishing process–and many are disappointed. Usually it’s because they had certain expectations that were not met. Whether they knew it or not, there was no way those expectations were going to be met because of the way they chose to have their books published. The way to avoid such disappointment is to be clear about what you want and to make sure you’re pursuing an avenue, whether it be self-publishing or traditional publishing, that will get those needs met.

To get clear about your desired outcome, it’s best to create a publishing plan for yourself. To do that, you ask yourself a series of questions so you can get a concrete picture of what you want. Make sure you write down your answers!

Fill-in-the-Blank

First, complete this statement: “I want my book to be____________”. Here you want to ask yourself, “Do I want my book to be a product I’m going to sell when I get speaking engagements?” or “Do I want it to be a door opener for potential jobs or other business opportunities?” or “Do I want it to be a gift that people are going to pass around?” or “Do I want it to be the first in a long line of my contributions to the literary canon?” What exactly do you want your book to be or to do for you?

I recently spoke to an author/editor working on an inspirational book. When I asked her why she was doing the book, she said she wanted to put a positive message out in the world. Okay, that’s great, but she could do that by just printing up a few hundred copies and giving the book away to anyone she met. When I probed further about what she really needs this book to do, she said she wanted it to put her fledgling publishing company on the map and to establish a brand so she could create a series of books, much in the same vein as “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. With this in mind we were able to focus on marketing, because in order for her book to do these things she would need a very persistent, aggressive marketing campaign to make this happen. If she had only focused on her first answer, she would have made different decisions that may not have helped her get the result she wants.

The Money Question

Next, what do you want financially from your book? Do you want a publisher to give you a huge advance or does the money not really matter because you’re looking for prestige? Be honest with yourself. If making a lot of money is important to you, it’s going to be hard for a first time author to do that through a traditional publishing house. You would be better off self-publishing your book and then making a big push to sell as many copies as you can. Once you’ve established yourself with some sales you can always turn to a traditional publisher to help you reach a broader market.

Determined to Go Traditional?

Are you set on having the prestige, not to mention the relatively low-cost experience, of being published by a traditional publishing house like a St. Martin’s, Random House or any of the smaller to mid-size companies? If so, how long will you try to find a publisher? If this is your goal, you’re going to be focused on doing all the things you need to do to get the attention of a literary agent and/or acquisitions editor. That means developing a following (your platform), taking writing courses if necessary to improve your work, and searching for the right agent to represent you so you can get your foot in the door.

What are you willing to do to find the right agent and publisher? Send out 200 query letters? Are you willing to spend the money to go to conferences to make connections and tell people about your work?

The Numbers

How many books do you want in print and how many do you want to sell? If you sign with a traditional publisher, you may have no say in the matter, but if you self-publish you have the option to go with a company who can print up copies as you need them. Or maybe you don’t mind doing a print run of 5,000 copies and storing them in your garage! But what number of sales would you consider a success? 5,000 is considered a really good number in traditional publishing for your first time out. Maybe your goal is to sell 200. Or maybe you’re just making this book for your family, so you don’t really care how many you sell; you just want your family members to see that you wrote a book. That’s okay too!

Distribution

Next, how will you get those books to the places where they can be sold? How will you get distribution? How many doors are you willing to knock on? What’s your budget for this?

The Team

You may try, but if you self-publish you really can’t do it all on your own. Publishing will require you to work with others on developing an audience, marketing, distribution, sales and production. Who will be on your team? Are you going to hire a coach, an editor, a proofreader, a book designer, a publicist?

Stick to the Plan

If you answer all these questions clearing and honestly, you will have a comprehensive plan for how your book will come into the world. You’ll find the whole process will be easier when you have a plan–it’ll help you make decisions when problems or opportunities arise. Then you can tell others a different kind of story: how the publishing process was exciting and enjoyable–and not disappointing–for you.

Some professional writers want online article submission websites to disappear completely. Why, well because amateur online article writers and authors like me go there and post their work for free and other websites, Ezines and even print newsletters, newspapers, magazines or trade journals pick them up for free.

You can see why this causes a rift in the their professional freelance writing business right? Sure, yet consider that this is purely a supply and demand issue and when the flood gates are opened for regular people, THE PEOPLE, to write and express themselves on the Internet the supply goes way up, but the demand may only be increasing at a constant up-tick, although it is not a linear curve either, as it too is climbing.

Since the quality issues of the writing are of consideration and those seeking quality content are finite, the professional writers will need to pony up and increase both volume and quality, not sit on their butts and complain that they are being run out of work by a bunch of amateurs.

In fact for a group of psychological case studies (most writers in general) with huge overblown, unearned and undeserved egos it would seem, that if they are as good as they claim to be; then what is the problem? Well, they hate online article submission sites and complain that is the reason that they cannot make money? I think the reason is because they suck and are lazy.

For instance I wrote 7000 articles in 15-months, these writers wrote how many? 150 to 400? They just are complaining because they cannot compete and that is my opinion besides supply and demand will take care of them and shut them up for good. Consider all this in 2006.

The truth is that writing is a pet hate for many of us. Throughout school we have written an endless number of essays and articles and from a personal point of view I hardly ever looked forward to the prospect of writing. It seemed so difficult to keep the flow of an article going, and many times I use to run out of points to mention, making the content uninteresting and bland. However, at a time when article writing can dramatically improve website promotion, it is a method that should not be avoided.

Although there are a great number of people who like to write articles, either to promote their product or website, or to display their expertise in an area, there are also many more that would rather walk on hot coals than to sit down and write out an article. The key between the two sets of people is that one is prepared and has methods and procedures in place to quickly and effectively write articles, and the other does not plan at all.

One of the best ways to prepare yourself is to make an outline first. This will make you prepared for what you want to get across in the article and make the article flow. Using an outline you can start with the idea that you initially have for the article and make a plan for the succeeding steps. This will not only make the article more readable and understandable, but also make article writing easier and faster.

Rather than to sit and think of different sections of an article, an outline will provide a clear introduction, body and conclusion. Also brainstorm sentences and ideas that you feel would compliment the article and contribute to the impact it may have on a reader. These points could make the article creative, interesting and appealing to the reader.

Here I will provide a few tips and guidelines so that you can create an outline for all of your articles:

Do a brainstorming session and write down the good ideas that usually come to you first. Imagine being in the readers’ position and think of what might attract their interest. Assign a time frame that you aim to stick to, where you can write down all of your ideas and do any research that you may need to do. Review the ideas that you have jotted down and become familiar with the topic so that writing them in the article will be easy.

Next, determine the sub topic and sub titles of the article. If your article has apparent sections, you will then be able to make them clear for the reader using sub titles.

Now you can begin to add the “meat” of the article. You will need to connect all of your paragraphs and sub topics to form the body of the article. While you will have an introduction that will guide into the ideas of your paragraph, you will also need a conclusion to conclude your points and to drive in the purpose of the article.

Your article outline will also require you to write a draft. This may be required several times so that the outline is perfected as more drafts are written. The draft is meant for your eyes only so experiment with paragraphs and sentences so that the article reads how you see fit. As you write more drafts you will see clearly how the article progresses to the verge of being complete.

Re-read what you have written. Always refer to your outline so that you keep to the guidelines that you have set out for yourself. It’s very easy to get caught up in a particular sentence and to go off at a tangent. Your outline should stop this from happening. All the time spent writing out your outline should not go to waste. Trust and rely on your outline because it can prove to be a very helpful tool in writing all of your articles.

For some, writing articles is a unappealing thought, but an important one to undertake in internet marketing. Creating an outline can solve problems that many encounter.

Writing articles is a great way to attract internet users to your website. You are encouraged to give article writing a try and can submit articles to http://www.articleblotter.com to discover the benefits of article marketing. Also consider increasing your website visibility using the link directory found at the site.

Be passionate about your topic! I know beginning speakers who are so eager to be hired to speak that they tell prospective clients that they can speak on everything just give them a topic. Not so! Yes, most intelligent people can pull together an informative presentation by reading and researching, but if you are not truly excited and turned on about the topic you are going to present, you will not make a lasting impression on audience members or move them to take any action. If, however, you speak about a topic that excites you, a topic that you know and live, you will excite those hearing you. Pick a topic that will make a difference.

Develop your mission. Once you have picked the topic you plan to present, you will have a good deal of work to do to develop that topic into a powerful presentation. The first step is to develop your mission. Every topic is loaded with information, but if you don’t have a plan for the overall mission of your presentation, you will just add to the information overload most people are experiencing today. Ask yourself early in the planning process: What do I want them to remember and do three months from now? Take out a blank sheet of paper and write in one clear, concise sentence the mission of your presentation.

Pick your theme. Now work on your presentation’s theme, which should also be stated in one concise statement. A theme, often a statement of the three most important points to be covered, keeps the presentation “on track.” For example, when giving a presentation on the topic “Newsletters” my mission would be to lead audience members to “Create Dynamic Newsletters that People Love to Read” and my theme would be “ways to produce newsletters that are appealing visually, extremely readable, and loaded with the information needed and wanted by the target readers.”

Develop the topic. The difficult, but most important, part of the development has been accomplished. By this time, I have my outline of the three points I want to make from my theme. There are many different ways to gather and organize the material. The main tip to keep in mind is that any material that doesn’t fit the mission and the theme’s three points should be saved for a future presentation.

Test your topic. I like to test my topic before presenting it to paying clients and companies. There are many organizations like Chambers of Commerce, Kiwanis clubs, non-profit associations, and business schools that welcome speakers who will give a free speech. Try out your presentation on several of these occasions to find out how well received it is and if it makes a difference. I also teach Continuing Education classes, so will suggest my topic and title as a class selection. If many sign up and respond favorably, I know I have a “winner.”

Self publishing can actually cost you little or nothing! In fact, if you’re paying to self-publish your book, you’re missing out on an incredibly valuable resource to make your book a winner.

Ever heard of product placement in movies? The star walks into the kitchen, opens the refrigerator and pulls out a can of coke. The concept had it’s early beginnings when E.T. was lured from his hiding place with Reece’s Pieces. And it reached its zenith in the movie Castaway (the whole film could have been seen as a subtle infomercial for FedEx). Corporations pay money for that sort of stuff. And you can understand why. It’s the equivalent of an endorsement of the product by the star or the movie itself.

How can you do that with your self-published book? It’s not difficult. I know one author who wrote a book on business etiquette and mentioned several specific business machines. Before she self published the book, she went to the manufacturer, let the director of marketing know about the product placement and asked if they’d like to sponsor the publication of the book. They did.

Another author wrote a romance that took place on a wonderful Caribbean island nation. She sent the manuscript to the director of tourism and asked if they’d like to either sponsor the publication of the book, or buy 3,000 copies for $10,000. They chose the later, but $10,000 underwrote the entire press run of 6,000 copies. The author got 3,000 copies of her book for free!

In each case, the author asked the sponsor or buyer for only one condition. The self-published books they received for their financial involvement could only be either given away free, or sold for the full cover price. That way, the author was never undercut on price.

Would major companies, government agencies and other large entities really want to be involved with your self-published book? Hey, if you take a look at the cost of advertising, the cost of self-publishing a book is cheap! $20,000 for a single page in a national magazine. And then you come along and give them a promotional tool that has the legitimacy and the integrity of a published book, at a price that’s almost insignificant when compared to their total annual budget.

These steps will make it easy for you. Make sure your book is complete, but in manuscript form.

Make a list of 20 companies that could benefit from the topic, direction, setting, entertainment value, or information your book has.
Make one copy of your manuscript and insert specific product placement throughout the book. By product placement, I mean specific products, or specific strategies that some companies use, or locations, or whatever you think puts the idea of the product before the reader.

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters:

The Hero’s Journey:

• Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

• Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

• Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

The Hero’s Journey is also a study of repeating patterns in successful stories and screenplays. It is compelling that screenwriters have a higher probability of producing quality work when they mirror the recurring patterns found in successful screenplays.

The Hero’s Journey is also a study of conventions. Before screenwriters can decide whether to accept or reject the conventions, they must appreciate their purpose and value.

Consider this:

• Titanic (1997) grossed over $600,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Star Wars (1977) grossed over $460,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Shrek 2 (2004) grossed over $436,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• ET (1982) grossed over $434,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Spiderman (2002) grossed over $432,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Out of Africa (1985), Terms of Endearment (1983), Dances with Wolves (1990), Gladiator (2000) – All Academy Award Winners Best Film are based on the Hero’s Journey.

• Anti-hero stories (Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) etc) are all based on the Hero’s Journey.

• Heroine’s Journey stories (Million Dollar Baby (2004), Out of Africa (1980) etc) are all based on the Hero’s Journey.

Passive and Active Transformation

During the Transformation (also known as the Road of Trials), the hero acts both passively and actively.

It is not unusual for there to be two passive transformations, followed by one active. During the passive, the hero learns and during the active, the hero demonstrates that he has learnt.

In Elizabethtown (2005), Drew first visits his father’s coffin (passively), then meets his family (passively) and then saves Samson (active).

In The Matrix (1999), Neo first learns martial arts by simulation (passive), then batlles Morpheus (passive) and then must jump the building (active).
